Tim Wakefield, Boston Book Signing Event “Knuckler”

Red Sox right-handed knuckleball pitcher Tim Wakefield will be in Boston and nearby Brookline signing copies of Knuckler: My Life with Baseball’s Most Confounding Pitch

Wakefield, who began pitching for the Red Sox in 1995, is an eight-time nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award which he won in 2010 and was ranked third in all-time Red Sox wins in 2010 with 179 total. Going into his 17th season with the Red Sox, he’s among the oldest players in Major League Baseball today. To date he’s had 2,066 strikeouts and is a two-time World Series winner.

Wakefield’s pitching style has allowed him more pitches per game than most as well as an overall longer professional career than a conventional pitcher. “Knuckler,” which just hit bookshelves on April 6, 2011, tells the story of the pitch that has defined Wakefield’s long career.

Excerpt
“The knuckleball, I know, is a big part of the story. It’s a big part of who I am. But I’ve never really thought of myself as being different, not really, not in comparison to other pitchers and certainly not in comparison to the people who come watch us play.

What I am, I believe, is someone who got a bunch of second chances and took advantage of them, who persevered through adversity. I hope that comes through as much as anything else in this book. I think there are lessons in that for all of us. I know there were for me.” –Time Wakefield
